Hello there! We’re celebrating the release of the new Altenew Seasonal Textures Stand-alone Embossing Folder Collection! If you arrived from Natasha Davies‘s blog, you’re right on track. If you want to hop along from the beginning, visit the Altenew Card Blog. Check the bottom of this post for giveaway information and the full blog hop list.
This card features a technique that’s new to me and I’m excited to share it! I’ve been making a ton of backgrounds and hope that this might encourage you to look at embossing folders in a new way.
I started placing a piece of 80# cardstock in the Frilly Peonies 3D embossing folder and running it through my die cut machine; then I set the panel aside. For this technique, it’s important to get a deep impression so if your impression seems light, add a piece or two of copy paper to your die cutting plate sandwich to act as a shim, being careful not to overtax your die cutting machine with too much thickness.
Next, I prepped a Gel Press gel printing plate (I used a 5″ x 7″ plate). I dabbed a few dots of a magenta acrylic paint on the plate and then used a brayer to spread the paint into a thin layer. Without delaying, I placed the embossed panel face down (with the most textured side touching the paint) onto the Gel Press. Using just my fingertips, I gently pressed over the embossed flowers and leaves, making sure that they made contact with the Gel Press. It’s important to be gentle, the embossed panel needs only to barely touch the paint and pressing too hard flattens the embossing and picks up more paint which obscures the image. I removed the embossed panel and set it aside before eventually throwing it away (though you could likely make a card from it, too!).
I waited a few minutes to let the magenta paint dry and then I dabbed some dots of an iridescent gold acrylic paint onto the Gel Press and used the brayer to spread the paint into a thin layer. Again without delaying, I placed a half sheet of Neenah Solar White 80# Classic Crest cardstock over the plate and rubbed my hands over it firmly, making sure to make complete contact with the plate. Then, starting at one end, I lifted and peeled away the cardstock, pulling the two layers of paint away with it.
I let the panel dry and then trimmed it to about 4″ x 5.25″ inches. To finish the card, I used foam tape to adhere it to a card base and then added a sentiment (from the Sentiment Strips 2 stamp set) which I heat embossed in white onto black cardstock.

Very cool Seeka. I had to reread your directions before I understood what the process was. “Wait, you throw out the embossed panel?” I was a bit confused. But your end result is stunning.

What an adventuresome technique. I have never used my gel press- just nervous about trying something new. I would love to try this with my many Altenew embossing folders. Thanks for the inspiration and very clear instructions.
