Hello, crafty friends! It’s release day at Hero Arts and we’re celebrating the March release with a blog hop and giveaway. If you’ve arrived from Pocono Pam’s blog, you’re right on track. If you’d like to start from the beginning, head on over to the Hero Arts blog.

This month’s kit is all about reading. Yesterday, Hero Arts shared a quote by Mason Cooley that I love: “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.” The entire kit is a great value at $34.99 when its contents are valued at $73!

I made this card with my dad in mind. I have always love reading and for many decades now, one of my favorite things to do when I go visit him is to lie on the floor of whatever room he’s and read while he does his thing. Often he’s painting or reading himself and I’ve just always found it comforting to quietly share space with him. So, this is me, surrounded by books, on his studio floor 🙂

I began by stamping all of the images in Copic-friendly Intens-ified Black Ink onto Hero Hues Dove White cardstock.  Then I colored them up using a range of colors from yellow to deep purple. From left to right, I used: Y35, Y38, YR07, R05, R27, R37, RV66, and V09. For the girl’s skin, I used E50, E53, and E34, and for her hair, I used W5, W7, and W9. For the side table’s legs, I used E34, and E55. When I finished coloring, I die cut all of the images and set them aside.

For the background, I did just a bit of ink blending to great a light and subtle ground at the bottom of a 4.25″ x 5.5″ panel of Dove White cardstock. I masked off all but the bottom 1.75″ of the panel and then used a blending brush to blend Soft Granite ink onto the exposed area, concentrating the color closest to the mask, and letting it fade out to white at the bottom of the panel.

Next, I adhered the books, girl, and stool (with a stack of books on top) across the card, creating a variety of dimension by using glue for the elements in the background, adhesive dots for the elements in the midground, and foam tape for the elements in the foreground. I also left the girl’s feet un-adhered, and curled them away from the background slightly to add a bit more dimension.

To finish, I stamped the sentiment in black Onyx Pigment ink and then adhered the card front to a card base.

  1. Love the idea that without one’s friend to spend time with, LOTS of books are going to be read! I know I have read more since last March, and I used to read a book every 2 wks. Now it’s about a book / wk. Love your card and would love to win! As a public HS teacher, I would get a lot of use of this set!!

  24. I’ve always been an avid book reader, and still am, so this month’s kit is a winner in my book! I loved the way you stacked books all around the little reader, as though she were just sailing smoothly from one to another, which is how I still like to read. The colored images just popped out from the white background, and your card drew me right in as soon as I saw it. Thank you for such a neat idea. I’ve already ordered my kit!
