Hi there and happy May! Is it just me, or did April fly by?!
Today we’re celebrating Altenew’s Build-A-Flower: Snapdragon* release! If you arrived from Zsoka Marko’s blog, you’re right on track. If you want to hop along from the beginning, visit the Altenew Card Blog. Check the bottom of this post for the full blog hop list!
For my first card, I started by stamping up a whole garden full of snapdragons using Altenew Crisp Dye inks. It was amazing to see these flowers come to life as I stamped each layer; the dimension is incredible! For the yellow snapdragons, I used Warm Sunshine, Chamomile, and Sunkissed, with Parrot and Fresh Leaf for their stems. For the blue snapdragons, I used Iceberg, Eastern Sky, and Hydrangea, with Grass Field and Shadow Creek for their stems. Then I used the coordinating dies to die cut them all out before setting them aside to work on the background.
For the background I stamped an image from the Block Print stamp set in Silver Stone ink. Then I stamped a sentiment from the Crafty Life stamp set in black ink.
To assemble the card, I arranged all of the flowers and then began sliding Zots Bling adhesive dots under each stem to adhere them into place. I cut the release paper so that I was only working with one dot at a time, then I slid the release paper and dot beneath the die cut that I wanted to adhere, then I pressed down and lifted up on the die cut (while keeping one part of the die cut anchored so that it’s placement didn’t change) so that the dot was transferred from the release paper to the underside of the die cut. This continues to be my preferred way of adhering collections of die cuts since I don’t have to flip the pieces over once I get everything arranged. I also love that the dots are strong and adhere in only one spot so that edges of the die cut can lift away a bit, an effect that I love for flowers!
Once all the flowers were adhered, I used a paper trimmer to trim off the anything that was hanging off the edges of the card, saving some pieces of the flowers which I adhered into the corners of the card before again trimming anything hanging off the edge of the card.
For my second card, I used the same colors of ink to create three stems of snapdragons. This time I added even more dimension by adding a bit of shading using Mineral Orange and Pumpkin Orange Prismacolor colored pencils.
For the background, I started with an A2-sized piece of Strathmore Bristol Smooth cardstock and then used ink blending tools to blend on Ocean Waves, Dusk, and Desert night inks in a diagonal ombre pattern. To create light-colored splatter, I sprinkled clean clear water over the panel and let it sit for about ten seconds before soaking the droplets up with a paper towel. Then I used some watered down blue gouache create dark blue splatter at the top left of the card. Then I added a bit of white gouache to the mixture and added some lighter blue splatter to the bottom right of the card.
When the panel was dry, I stamped the sentiment in black ink. Lastly, I adhered the snapdragons using the same method as above card, with the addition of some liquid glue under the stems.
